‘메타-개념주의로서의 스키매틱 미디엄’ 

에이프로젝트 컴퍼니는 급변하는 동시대 미술계를 바라보고 이에 대응하는 자신만의 조형어법을 고안하여 작품세계를 펼쳐나가는 김희조의 개인전을 개최한다.

이번 전시는 2020년 유아트 스페이스 이후 국내에서 두 번째로 열리는 개인전으로서 스키매틱 미디엄의 개념과 방법론이 적용된 <One Hour> Series, <Semi Circle & Nine Drawing> Series, <Core Searching Drawing> Series, <Color Line Painting> Series 등과 <BYR_OS> Series, <BYR_QUAD> Series등 지금까지 해온 그의 모든 작품이 총망라되어 전시된다.

김희조는 모더니즘 이후 가장 중요한 조형요소인 점, 선, 면, 형, 색의 본질을 반성적이며 성찰적으로 돌아보는 메타 개념주의적 접근을 통하여 ‘스키매틱 미디엄 (Schematic Medium)’이라는 방법론을 고안해 냈다.

‘Schematic Medium’은 하나의 원리에 기반하여 다양하게 시리즈로 전개하거나 유기적으로 제작하는 김희조만의 작품 제작 방식이자 그 결과물로서의 작품을 의미한다.

‘스키매틱Schematic’은 ‘스키마Schema’의 형용사로서 ‘도표’ 혹은 ‘도식’을 뜻하지만, 인지심리학에서는 세상과 상호작용하고 이해하는 데 사용하는 ‘인지적 틀’이나 ‘사고의 구조’를 말한다.

‘미디엄Medium’은 일반적으로 ‘수단’이나 ‘도구’, ‘재료’ 등을 뜻하지만, 동시대 미술계에서는 회화, 조각, 오브제 등과 같은 미술의 표현 양식 전체를 의미하는 용어로 쓰인다.

따라서 김희조의 ‘스키매틱 미디엄Schematic Medium’은 복잡다단하고 변화무쌍한 오늘의 세계를 제대로 인식하고 회화, 조각, 오브제와 같은 독립적인 쟝르를 새로운 조형개념으로 조합하여 유기적인 시리즈 형식으로 완성해낼 수 있는 매우 독창적 개념이자 전략이라 할 수 있다.

‘Schematic Medium’의 작동원리는 개념의 구조화, 통일된 형식과 기법, 그리고 반복과 변주를 통해 이루어진다.

 개념의 구조화

작품의 주제가 명확할 경우 작가는 그 내용을 부분적이고 단편적인 모습이 아니라 전체적이고 구조적인 모습으로 파악하여 일관성있게 표현하므로써 작품의 메시지를 단편적이나 부분적인 왜곡없이 전체적인 모습으로 보여줄 수 있게 된다.

통일된 형식과 기법

통일된 형식과 기법으로 작품을 제작하면 일관된 주제와 스타일을 유지할 수 있어 관람자가 작품의 메시지를 쉽게 이해하고 공감할 수 있다. 또한, 작가의 고유한 스타일을 확립해 정체성을 강화하고, 작업 효율성을 높이며, 전체적인 미적 완성도를 높이는 데 도움이 된다.

예를 들어 피에 몬드리안(Piet Mondrian) 은 수평선과 수직선, 그리고 삼원색을 이용하여 작품을 제작하므로써 세상의 모든 대상은 수직과 수평으로 환원될 수 있다는 그의 신지학적 사상을 조형적으로 잘 보여주고 있다.

또한 솔 르윗(Sol LeWitt)은 점, 선, 면, 형에 수학적 규칙과 도식적 개념을 적용하여 유기적이며 통일적인 형식으로 작품을 제작하므로써 작가의 조형원리와 방법론을 잘 보여주고 있다.

반복과 변주

인간의 사고는 다면적이고 복합적이기 때문에 하나의 형식만으로는 제대로 된 표현이 불가능하다. 따라서 반복과 변주를 통하여 조형을 확장시킴으로써 더욱 효과적으로 작품의 내용과 의도를 드러낼 수 있다. 또한 관객들은 작품의 시작과 과정 그리고 그 흐름을 제대로 볼 수 있게 해준다.

김희조는 이러한 방식을 회화, 조각, 오브제 등 다양한 장르에 적용하며, 동시대 미술에 대한 메타적 접근을 통해 현재 미술의 본질과 경계를 탐구한다. 

따라서 이번 전시는 오늘날의 미술을 되돌아보고 재해석하는 과정을 통하여 동시대 미술의 확장 가능성을 탐구해가는 김희조 작가의 진수를 엿볼 수 있는 전시라 할 수 있다.

Schematic Medium as Meta Conceptualism

Aproject Company is proud to host Kim Heejo’s solo exhibition, which unfolds his artistic universe through his unique formal language in response to the rapidly evolving contemporary art scene.

This exhibition, his second solo show in Korea since the 2020 U Art Space, showcases all his works to date, including series such as <One Hour>, <Semi Circle & Nine Drawing>, <Core Searching Drawing>, <Color Line Painting>, along with <BYR_OS> and <BYR_QUAD>, all embodying the principles of the Schematic Medium.

Kim Heejo has devised the methodology of the 'Schematic Medium' through a meta-conceptual approach that reflects on the essential elements of post-modernism—point, line, plane, shape, and color—introducing a reflective and contemplative perspective.

The 'Schematic Medium' represents a distinct approach to creating artworks that are based on a foundational principle and evolve into various series or are organically produced as finished works.

'Schematic' as an adjective of 'Schema', typically means 'diagram' or 'plan'. However, in cognitive psychology, it refers to a 'cognitive framework' or 'structure of thought' used for interacting with and understanding the world.

'Medium', commonly refers to 'means' or 'tool', but in the context of contemporary art, it denotes the entire range of artistic expression forms such as painting, sculpture, and objects.

Thus, Kim Heejo's 'Schematic Medium' is an innovative concept and strategy that allows for the accurate recognition of today’s complex world and the combination of independent genres like painting, sculpture, and objects into a new formal concept, completing them in an organic series format.

The operating principle of the 'Schematic Medium' involves the structuring of concepts, unified form and technique, and is achieved through repetition and variation.

Concept Structuring

When the theme of the artwork is clear, the artist is able to capture and consistently express its content in a holistic and structured manner, allowing the artwork’s message to be conveyed without any fragmentary or partial distortion.

Unified Form and Technique

Creating artworks with a unified form and technique maintains a consistent theme and style, making it easier for viewers to understand and empathize with the artwork’s message. This also establishes the artist's unique style, enhances identity, increases work efficiency, and elevates the overall aesthetic completion.

For example, Piet Mondrian’s use of horizontal and vertical lines along with primary colors demonstrates his neo-plasticist belief that all objects can be reduced to verticals and horizontals, effectively illustrating his philosophical ideas. Similarly, Sol LeWitt applied mathematical rules and schematic concepts to points, lines, planes, and shapes to produce works in an organic and unified form, demonstrating the artist's principles and methodologies.

Repetition and Variation

Human thought is multifaceted and complex, and thus cannot be fully expressed with a single form. By expanding the form through repetition and variation, the content and intent of the work can be more effectively revealed. Additionally, this allows the audience to properly see the beginning, process, and flow of the artwork.

Kim Heejo applies this approach across various genres such as painting, sculpture, and objects, exploring the essence and boundaries of contemporary art through a meta-conceptual approach.

Thus, this exhibition serves as a profound retrospective and reinterpretation of today's art, exploring the expansive possibilities of contemporary art through the lens of Kim Heejo's work.
